World famous today for hosting The Derby, The Oaks and The Coronation Cup, Epsom Downs racecourse is a wonderfully alternative Surrey venue steeped in history and positioned on the top of the North Downs offering wonderful views all around.

A Brief History of Epson Downs Racecourse

The first race recorded at Epsom Downs was in 1661 though racing was held here a lot earlier than this.

In 1779 the 12th Earl of Derby held a race with his friends for their three year old fillies and named it after his nearby estate nearby, Oaks; a year later he held another race, this time embracing three year old colts and fillies and this was named the Derby.

In 1774 the course was extended to 1½ miles and included Tattenham Corner.

The racecourse has always had a strong link with Royalty, from as early as 1663 when Charles ll was a regular attendee; In 1902, the Coronation Cup was established to celebrate the coronation of King Edward Vll. In 1913 The suffragette Emily Davidson threw herself in front of King George V horse, dying four days later of her injuries and. The Queen still regularly attends race days, arriving in the British Royal Train at Tattenham Corner railway station.
